(Originally published on Travel Books and Movies in July 2012.) It was the sixth-highest grossing movie in 2006, sold 5 million copies in two days when released on DVD, and it was a movie made for kids—Cars tells the story of the famous Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) who accidentally caused some damage to the road in Radiator Springs and must repair it. While in the small town, he learns about friends, hard work, and values.

Children love the movie (I’ve been to several Cars-themed birthday parties myself) and Disney is depending on that love with its’ newly opened Cars Land at Disneyland Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort in California.

Covering 12 acres, the land has restaurants, shopping, and three main attractions:

  • Radiator Springs Racers—After receiving information from Doc and Lightning McQueen, guests race against other vehicles through tight turns and steep banks.
  • Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree—Guests get to ride around in tractors in this fun ride set to music.
  • Luigi’s Flying Tires—Similar to the Mad Tea Party, but with an Italian accent as the backdrop, this ride whips guests around tires spun by fan-like blowers.

Kids will love a trip to this land where they can “interact” with their favorite characters.
