This is the start of a new cozy mystery series by Sherry Harris, known for her Sarah Winston Garage Sale Mystery series. Even though I’m a cozy mystery fan, I haven’t actually read any of those, but I was drawn to this one because of its setting: a small town on the Florida panhandle that thrives on the tourist industry, but doesn’t want to succumb to the high-rises and big businesses like so many other beach towns in Florida. (And, to be more specific, the setting of a bar was a bonus. 🙂 )
From Beer to Eternity is the story of Chloe Jackson, a Chicago native whose best friend is killed in action overseas; to fulfill a promise to him, Chloe finds herself in Florida working at his grandmother’s bar, the Sea Glass Saloon, in small town Emerald Cove which has several small businesses working hard to stay afloat. Soon after her arrival, though, one of those small business owners winds up dead–and not only is Chloe the one to find the body, but her friend’s grandmother is the prime suspect.
So, of course, Chloe must find out the truth–not just about the murder, but about why her friend asked her to go to Florida and what she wants out of life.
It’s a fun read with likeable characters, an exciting plot with an intriguing mystery, and an interesting setting (the three most important parts of a cozy mystery). I’m curious to see where Chloe (and Emerald Cove) end up in the future!
